Five questions that reveal a meeting-heavy culture.

Replace vague claims about collaboration with specific evidence about calendar load, focus time and communication expectations.

Ask these questions during interviews and compare the answers across the recruiter, hiring manager and future teammates. Consistency is itself a useful signal.

1. “What does a typical team calendar look like?”

Ask for the approximate number of recurring meeting hours per week and which meetings are required.

2. “Which decisions happen asynchronously?”

Strong async teams document decisions, circulate context before meetings and avoid using calls as the default response to uncertainty.

3. “How is focus time protected?”

Look for concrete practices such as no-meeting blocks, team-wide quiet hours or limits on recurring meetings.

4. “How are urgent requests handled?”

Clarify escalation channels, response-time expectations and whether “urgent” has an agreed definition.

5. “What are the camera and attendance expectations?”

Determine whether internal calls require cameras, whether sessions are recorded and whether employees can decline optional meetings.
